Your Ultimate Lingerie Guide: Tips, Trends, and Sizing Advice | UCALingerie

Choosing Sustainable Lingerie

There is a lot of attention being paid to sustainability these days. With plastic pollution, climate change, deforestation, and water scarcity in the news all the time, it’s hard not to wonder who’s at fault and how you can make a difference. Sadly, the fashion industry is a massive contributor to the environmental damage we see every day, but there is hope! Sustainable lingerie, clothing, and accessories are a growing trend that many in the industry hope to make permanent. Learn more about why sustainability matters from the team at UCA Lingerie!

What is Sustainable Fashion?

Any brand that claims its clothing is sustainable is making strides towards reducing environmental impact. Whether it’s using eco-friendly materials, offsetting carbon emissions, or reducing manufacturing waste, every step they take towards protecting the environment is crucial. Many brands also focus on creating high-quality products that stand the test of time to reduce waste on the consumer’s end, as they no longer need to constantly dispose of holey bras and shirts, only to replace them with new ones that also wear out right away.

1. Saving Natural Resources

One of the biggest reasons why sustainability matters, and why UCA Lingerie is committed to creating sustainable lingerie, is an attempt to save our natural resources. Currently, only about 3% of textiles and materials used in fashion manufacturing are recycled. Everything else uses up new resources – requiring over 90 million tons of resource input. Recycled textiles have proven that they can reduce pressure on natural resources and waste management.

2. Reducing Your Carbon Footprint

Since fashion manufacturers release a lot of greenhouse gasses each year, we need to take responsibility to cut down on clothing made from fossil fuels. Sustainable lingerie and fashion means avoiding petroleum-based materials like acrylic, nylon, and polyester. Using alternatives like recycled plastic bottles, Tencel lyocell, hemp, organic cotton, and linen do more than just reduce greenhouse gasses; they also require less chemical treatment and provide biodegradable options.

3. Saving Animals

Did you ever think you would learn that sustainable lingerie can save animals? Animal lovers of the world unite to shop eco-friendly products that choose vegan leather, faux furs, and alternative materials to create the same textures in a cruelty-free way. From polyester made with trash from our oceans to silk created by yeast, there are advances every year that can help preserve animal environments and save lives.

4. Using Less Water

Water is one of our most precious resources, and millions are suffering from droughts and lack of access. The fashion industry uses an insane amount of water for dyeing and finishing clothing – it takes over 700 gallons of water to produce a single t-shirt!

When we use organic cotton for our sustainable lingerie, bras, and panties, we’re reducing water consumption by about 90%! Other textiles that utilize less water include linen, hemp, and recycled fibers.

5. Supporting Better Working Conditions

One of the ugly truths in the fashion industry is that slave and child labor still exists. Miniscule wages, extremely long hours, and unsafe working conditions are what ensure your clothing stays as cheap as possible. Many brands that choose sustainability also focus on fair trade practices to ensure every part of the manufacturing process is as ethical as possible.

These sustainable lingerie and fashion brands work with manufacturing partners that guarantee fair wages, safe working conditions, healthcare for employees, and much more, which is a huge reason for why sustainability matters.

6. Protecting Our Health

Fast fashion products usually undergo intense chemical processing before they end up in your closet. There are thousands of synthetic dyes and chemicals used to create and preserve your garments. Many of these are harmful to the environment, animals, and humans – often causing diseases and deaths as they leach out to areas surrounding factories. These chemicals can even affect you when your skin absorbs the particles from your clothes.

Washing new clothes and checking for chemical content certification is the key to protecting everyone’s health. Some certifications to look for include GOTS, OEKO-TEX®, and BLUESIGN®. At UCA Lingerie, all of our products are sustainable lingerie and have been OEKO-TEX certified, as well as meeting DETOX standards for EU eco-protection and CUC certification for our organic cotton textiles.
